Dr. Maria Pitre-Martin
Dr. Pitre-Martin will bring greetings and an update from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
SPEAKER BIO: On March 3, 2016, Dr. Maria Pitre-Martin was named the new Chief Academic and Digital Learning Officer for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Prior to that, Dr. Pitre-Martin served as Superintendent of Thomasville City Schools. Before working in Thomasville, she served as Director of K-12 Curriculum and Instruction at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Dr. Pitre-Martin has served as the Chief Academic Officer for the School District of Philadelphia and also served as an Assistant Superintendent for the East Baton Rouge Parish School System in Louisiana. Dr. Pitre-Martin is a Broad Superintendents Academy Fellow with a Doctorate of Philosophy in Educational Administration from Texas A&M University. Dr. Pitre-Martin served as the Director of Research and Staff Development for the Fort Bend Independent School District in Sugar Land, Texas and the principal of Oakwood Intermediate School in College Station, Texas.

Dr. John Hodge
SPEAKER BIO: Dr. John W. Hodge's career has been defined by assisting students and teachers with overcoming obstacles and achieving goals. He has served as an inspirational speaker across the United States and has been a guest lecturer at Christopher Newport University, Hampton University, North Carolina A&T State University and George Washington University. Dr. Hodge is a trained facilitator for the (SREB) Leadership Initiative Modules "Leading Assessment and Instruction" and "Creating a High Performance Learning Culture", and a trained assessor and facilitator in the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) "Developing the 21st Century Principal" program.
Dr. Hodge is the president and co-founder of Urban Learning and Leadership Center (ULLC), an organization focused on student achievement and reduction of the achievement gap. He has served as a reading teacher, English teacher, AVID teacher, Assistant Principal and Associate Director of AVID Center Eastern Division. He served as Director of An Achievable Dream Academy, an inner city school that piloted many of the interventions used by Urban Learning and Leadership Center. An Achievable Dream Academy is a high performing, high poverty school that has received numerous national awards.
ABOUT THIS SESSION: Join Dr. Hodge as he presents BE THE ONE! He will discuss how the education of America's youth is a challenging prospect when one considers the many burdens faced by impoverished children and their families. Research indicates that poverty need not be a barrier to academic excellence. As co-author of the book Standing in the Gap, Dr. Hodge states, "Across the nation, schools are demonstrating that it can be done: That students can reach high standards, that all children can succeed, that the gap between white and minority students, poor and affluent, can be closed." More often than not, one caring adult can make all the difference in the world. Dr. Hodge's presentation will encourage all of us to BE THE ONE!

The Balanced Teacher Path:
SPEAKER BIO: Justin's teaching career began in 2007 in Charlotte, North Carolina. His teaching honors include Charlotte's East Zone Teacher of the Year in 2011, North Carolina History Teacher of the Year in 2013, and North Carolina Social Studies Teacher of the Year in 2013. He has trained educators across the state on creative lesson planning and work-life balance. His book, The Balanced Teacher Path, was published this year and is the basis for his session.
ABOUT THIS SESSION: It wasn't long after being named North Carolina History Teacher of the Year that Justin Ashley started noticing signs of burnout. He knew he needed to make some radical changes in how he handled his work and personal life. In his session The Balanced Teacher Path, Justin will share his personal story—illuminating how easy it is to give your job everything you've got and leave yourself with nothing outside of school—and will show new teachers and veterans alike the self-care techniques they can employ to create work-life balance and prevent burnout. With equal parts humor and wisdom, Justin will analyze four key aspects of every teacher's life—career, social, physical/emotional, and financial—and offer practical advice to bring these areas into sync, reigniting a passion for teaching in the process!

The Pour Into Effect
SPEAKER BIO: Kyle Greene is a motivational speaker, author, mentor and a coach. He is the author of The Mentality Changer and is in the process of writing a sequel, The Mentality Changer II, that is expected to be released in the fall of 2017. Kyle is a motivational speaker that has been speaking all over the southeast spreading his message of love, hope, and purpose at middle schools, high schools, charter schools, alternative schools, Djj, prisons, churches and nonprofit organizations. Kyle believes that everyone has the potential to be great and he wants to help get each person to tap into their greatness.
ABOUT THIS SESSION: Join Kyle Green as he presents The Pour Into Effect and reminds us that our job affects the outcome of the next generation. Through his personal life story, Kyle creatively weaves together how he became who he is today by teachers, administrators, and coaches that took the time and poured back into him; his potential to be "GREAT." One of the most important things that educators can do is to pour into a student's potential and then help show them how to tap into their "GREATNESS." At the end of this session Kyle inspires and equips educators with the following takeways:

Teaching the Concept of "Adversity"
SPEAKER BIO: Rick Jetter, Ph.D. is a National Educational Consultant, Author, Speaker, and Trainer. He has previously worked as a Middle School English Teacher, a Middle School Assistant Principal, an Elementary Principal, an Assistant Superintendent of Technology, an Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, and a Superintendent of Schools before facing extreme adversity and defeat within his career.
Rick has rebuilt his life from scratch by teaching others about adversity and authoring multiple books in various genres, including the highly acclaimed best seller, Escaping the School Leader's Dunk Tank: How to Prevail When Others Want to See You Drown. His other work, current books and upcoming publications focus on adversity training, the power of mindfulness, hiring the best staff for your school, and how to use authentic stories for carrying out positive school climate change. Rick's training and keynotes are bold, reflective, emotional, and insightful and will leave you laughing and entertained through his doses of real scenarios that you can relate to within the schools of yesterday and today.
ABOUT THIS SESSION: Emotional intelligence (EQ) and character education initiatives often forget to include the concept of "adversity" or carrying out explicit, formalized training in "adversity." As students will encounter adversity throughout their entire lives, are we preparing them to identify, understand, navigate, and solve problems related to the inevitable adverse conditions that they will face in both school and life? Participants will learn about how to infuse adversity training in their classrooms, schools, or staff development programs with strategies on how to grow more powerful EQ learners who are well versed in "adversity awareness."

This session will use stories, scenarios, and reflections to carry the audience through an engaging presentation. Participation in this "Adversity University" session will include lightning-rod writing prompt activities and sending out social media blasts while generating practical ideas for teaching and learning about adversity in any classroom or school.

SPEAKER BIO: Kathy Bumgardner is a proud veteran North Carolina educator with more than 30+ years as a classroom teacher, literacy coach, and instructional specialist. She always works to combine research-based instructional best practices and her own classroom experiences with positive humor at every opportunity in her sessions. As a veteran teacher with experiences spanning a variety of grade levels PreK-8, diverse classrooms, and literacy positions in North Carolina Schools, Kathy fully understands the value of sharing "REAL WORLD" teaching strategies that are researched-based and that "really" worked with students in her own classrooms. She strives to support teachers with the overwhelming challenges that teachers and educators face today in preparing students to be "College and Career Ready" for the more rigorous standards and complex literacy required in today's world. Additionally, she is the original creator of THINK ALOUD CLOUDS and hundreds of other engaging hands-on student/teacher literacy tools that she also shares in sessions and in the schools and districts she works with across the country.
ABOUT THE SESSIONS: Join Kathy in Getting it Together with Guided Reading: Strategies for Small Group Instruction that Works. Is planning for, and implementing, meaningful and productive small group instruction a challenge for you? Then this session is for you! Multiple strategies and valuable resources will be shared as we explore some real world classroom solutions for the problems of getting it together for guided reading.
In Kathy's second session, Making the Reading and Writing Instructional Connection: Providing Sustaining Comprehension in Today's K-5 Classroom, she will discuss how today's students need WRITING to help them learn about READING and they need READING to help them learn about WRITING. But planning for the successful integration of both in the already jam-packed literacy block can be a real issue. Participants will be able to walk away with updated quality strategies and literacy tools to provide scaffolding and support to the classroom teacher's daily busy schedule.

Growing Global Leaders
SPEAKER BIO: Lisa Godwin lives at Topsail Beach, North Carolina and is an educator with the Onslow County School District. Lisa has viewed public education through many different lenses, giving her the unique perspective and ability to be an informed and conscientious voice for the educational community. She began her educational journey in 1997 with the Lee County School District as an instructional assistant and bus driver. Upon entering the classroom, she knew that education was her life’s purpose and went on to obtain her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Andrews Presbyterian College. After teaching for several years, she obtained her Master of School Administration from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served as an assistant principal in Lee County for 2 years and then 2 more years with the Onslow County School District before deciding to find her joy again by returning to the classroom! She joined the Dixon Elementary Family in 2013 where she continues to teach and lead.
ABOUT THIS SESSION: At Dixon Elementary, staff are working through a process to build and encourage students’ creativity, innovation, adaptability, and cultural understanding. Using Covey’s Leader in Me program in conjunction with the NC DPI Global Ready Attributes, students are afforded opportunities to achieve the skills necessary to become 21st century learners through an environment that encourages globally competitive thinkers (Dixon Elementary Mission). Using the NC DPI Global Ready rubric and Covey resources, participants will walk through activities and scenarios in order to successfully integrate two distinct programs seamlessly into one school-wide theme and driving force in order to achieve total school improvement and culture renewal .

SPEAKER BIO: The Bag Ladies, Cindy Guinn and Karen Simmons, are teachers in Palm Beach County, Florida. Their passion for teaching enthusiastically with hands-on activities to make the skills come alive, led these two teachers to share and motivate all teachers to create portfolios and projects with their students while teaching skills and strategies. All of the Bag Ladies Projects are cost effective and are designed to promote organizational skills, listening skills, fine motor coordination, and to heighten student motivation, focus, and engagement in the “rigorous” classrooms of today.
